with Joel Ekai Kreisberg
Mondo Zen Koans were developed by Jun Po Roshi as a modern adaptation of traditional Zen koans. While often contemplated on retreat and discussed in one on one meetings with a teacher, koans were also discussed in group as a public case discussion. Jun Po Roshi loved teaching koans publicly on sesshin with the sangha. We continue this modern tradition through our monthly study group.
Each session we will take up one koan. The source texts will be either the Wumenguan (Mumonkan), The Book of Householder Koans, or the Mondo Zen Koans of Junpo Roshi. Our sessions will include an opening check-in, followed by a guided meditation with the day’s koan. We will share our experience with the koan in small group discussion followed by an open full group investigation.
The koan for January 7th is :
A Person of Great Strength - Mumonkan # 20.
For those enrolling in the full fall practice period, you will have access to the program recordings as well as monthly koan meditations prepared by Joel Ekai Kreisberg.
