Spring Practice Period 2025
Brahmavihara: Cultivating Virtue Through The Four Immeasurables
Emyo Darlene Tataryn & Engo Michael Jackson
Sunday April 6th, 2025
9:00 am - 5:00 pm ET (New York)
In Pali, Brahmavihara refers to the Sanctuary of the Gods, Divine Abidings or the Divine Abodes. They are also known as the Four Divine Emotions. They are psycho-emotional states to be deeply cultivated in our life and way of being in the world. By practicing and developing the divine emotions, we will not only deconstruct habitual responses, we reconstruct our attitudes in such a way that we are more able to find equanimity informing clear and compassionate response in the world.
About This Retreat
We will explore each of the Brahmaviharas and what makes them “immeasurable”
What psycho-emotional challenges we face preventing us from living in the mind/heart state their practice serves to establish in our being
How our best intentions might become blind spots
Recognizing the near and far enemies of the Brahmaviharas
We will recognize our shared humanity as we clear away the hindrances to awakening and how that serves the collective
This day long retreat offers Dharma talks on the Brahmaviharas, opportunity for meditation and contemplation, and small and whole group sharing.
Come practice with us!
Newcomers and seasoned meditators are welcome.

Metta (loving-kindness) is a soft affection and care for oneself and others.
Karuna (compassion) is like an open heart that cares for everyone and does so with clarity and ability and willingness to put kindness into action.
Mudita (joy with others), sometimes is called sympathetic joy or appreciative joy. It is the ability to be happy for the circumstances of others.
Upekkha (equanimity) is a mind in a state of balance. It is the middle way; a state of mind that is receptive yet neither clinging nor pushing away.

About Emyo Darlene Tataryn
A pioneer, Darlene has been doing the work since the early 70's. Her depth insight comes from working deeply with somatic healing, dance therapy, developmental and expressive movement, meditation, and other "mystic" practices. She is the creator of the Asaya Process and Maitreya's Chair; two practices which open this breathing body into receptivity, release tension, realign the spine, and bring the body into natural, blissfully calming, self-healing cycles.
As a long time Meditation instructor and Counselor with an Expressive Therapy Bias, Darlene understands and is able to navigate between the disciplines of therapy and meditation. She is steeped in the understanding of the interconnection and interdependence of all of nature. As a Zen Priest and Mondo Zen facilitator, she is able to guide and orient healthy ego function to the service of clarity and depth of heart and mind.
Darlene's history included the Rinzai Zen Hollow Bones Lineage, The Karma Kagyu Lineage, and Sahaja Marg.
“It was so wonderful to learn from the sharing of others and to be able to share honestly and vulnerably. Emyo is so skilled, gentle and grounded that it felt easy to take my seat. Since the retreat, I have been experiencing holding mental pain and activity and the alwaysness of this big heart mind in the moment. ”
